A story left over from last year: winter bedding plants made a come back in Southsea thanks to a generous sponsorship offer. The organiser of the Victorious Festival has paid the roughly £15000 needed to bring back the winter plantings that had been cut a year or two ago as part of on going budget reductions.

There have been several examples lately of commercial sponsorship taking on tasks once done by the council. Perhaps the best is the Cosham bonfire and fireworks display, which were saved after the council leader spent several hours on the phone seeking support and was rewarded with an offer of free firewood.

There is a limit to the range of activities and functions for which sponsorship may forthcoming, but the whole council needs to make an effort to maximise the support that is potentially available.
