Positive news from the Planning Committee, with consent being granted for a new Travelodge Hotel by Victoria Park. The new 12-storey building will have 152 rooms and include a restaurant.

Meanwhile another hotel application, this time for the site between Portsmouth and Southsea Station and Catherine House (formerly the Zurich building) is expected within the next couple of weeks.

Demand for hotel beds remains strong and these developments will be a shot in the arm for the city centre and will lead to stronger demand for cafés and restaurants in the area.

There was some concern from the committee about the loss of trees involved with the Travelodge application. This has already led to 25 parking spaces being removed from the scheme through the deletion of the basement car park.
