The new Park and Ride service from Tipner is now up and running. A high frequency bus route connects the car park adjacent to the M275 with the city centre and Gunwharf, but does not reach Portsmouth’s third commercial centre: Southsea.

The lack of parking is one of the major problems faced by businesses in and aroundPalmerston Road. There is also a shortage of available spaces on the seafront at peak periods.

I have been working on a petition to force a council debate on changing this. So far about 500 people have signed.

The park and ride is going to run at a significant loss this year and next. To get to breakeven the council needs to find a way of keeping most of the 600 available spaces used most of the time. When that happens, the bus operators will start diverting existing commercial routes along the M275. Having multiple destinations would increase the service’s viability.
