Formal notification has been given that a substantial part of the Lakeside complex by the M275 will be turned into housing. Changes made last year to planning regulations mean consent is not required and the change of use can proceed whether the council likes it or not. 26000m2 of office space will be lost to free up space for 108 apartments.

I have said before that the new policy was a mistake. At a national level it has lead to the loss of far more employment space than the government forecast and it is not just poor quality office accommodation that is being lost. Still were the market for commercial space in Portsmouth stronger, this development would not be going ahead. The loss of such a large amount of prime office space to other uses is a blow to the city.

The reference number for the notification is 14/00003/PACOU
