Following coverage in The News of my petition to extend the Park and Ride service to Southsea, the council leader seems to be shifting his position. The paper reports him as saying that he is prepared to consider adding the route in a couple of years’ time as finances permits despite having previously ruled it out. He then goes on to add that this could cost 300 parking spaces in extra bus lanes. (Sorry, this article is not available online.)

There are mixed messages here. It is a sign of progress that the leader is changing his rhetoric, but talk of the loss of so many spaces makes the whole thing not sound serious as no-one is suggesting a new bus lane - not least because the route from The Hard via Museum Road is not congested.

The petition will be submitted with a view to forcing a council debate in July.
