Over the last ten years, Portsmouth City Council has gradually fallen behind other local authorities in making use of technology to deliver social care. That though is about to change. The council has joined the Telecare Services Association, a group that shares know how on what is on the market and how best to use it. A plan will be drawn up over the coming months.

There is so much out there now, from simple timed pill dispensers to technology that can detect whether someone has had a fall or even to software that can better diagnose dementia by monitoring people's behaviour over an extended period. Together with the local NHS, the council fully intends to make far greater use of the equipment that now exists to keep people safer and able to live independently for longer.
